Auburn James Winery
At AuburnJames, we produce small quantities of artisan California wines. Most of the processing is done by hand under the meticulous care of our winemaker, Jim Frost. There are many elements that determine the quality of a wine, and the utmost of care is taken to ensure that each step of the wine-making process is executed to the highest possible standard. From vineyard care to fruit selection and careful hand sorting, our goal is to deliver a very high quality product while trying to maximize what a particular AVA, vintage, and varietal has to offer.
The AuburnJames Winery was born in 2005 with the first crush of Cabernet Sauvignon grapes from the Raywood Vineyard in Napa Valley and a handshake between Matthew Ospeck and winemaker James Frost. These two men share a passion for artisan winemaking, and are committed to a process that is, for the most part, conducted by hand. Together, they are intent on producing small lots of Bordeaux style Napa Valley wines that are designed specifically for the AuburnJames wine club membership.
Several expansions now see the winery at 7,000 sq ft and producing approximately 3,500 cases annually, however most AuburnJames varietals and blends do not exceed 400 cases.
AuburnJames wines begin in the Spring of each growing season when Jim & Matt walk the vineyards discussing what each would like to achieve for the club membership for that vintage. The plan is then written in pencil and Mother Nature makes the changes that she deems necessary for the vintage. At harvest, fruit is carefully selected from each block within each vineyard. These relationships with independent growers throughout Northern California enable AuburnJames to enjoy the best fruit that many of the AVAs have to offer. From great fruit, and Jim’s artistry, AuburnJames has been able to produce award winning wines year over year.
Recently completed was the Danville Tasting Room & Gallery at 321 Hartz Avenue. Set in heart of historic downtown Danville and wrapped by an art gallery which showcases some outstanding local and nationally known contemporary impressionist works, AuburnJames is intent on building a loyal following one tasting at a time.
