From the early 1960s to present day, the “Arroyo Seco” district in Monterey County has been particularly recognized for growing outstanding Chardonnay wines. Many factors -- a cool climate influenced by nearby Monterey Bay, well-drained rocky soils, abundant good-quality water, and experienced, transplanted growers from other well known regions -- have combined to make wines from Arroyo Seco some of the most sought-after and awarded in the country.

Arroyo Seco was one of the first areas in Monterey County to be recognized as a unique winegrowing district with its designation as an American Viticultural Area (AVA) in 1983. In 2007, the Arroyo Seco Winegrowers and Vintners Association was formed to address common viticultural, enological, promotional and business issues.
